One Duck Day — a workday in two minutes
One Duck Day is a free browser game about the part of a workday nobody
builds tools for: deciding what not to do. You are a duck on a pond
with nine things floating on it, and eight in-game hours that pass in
about two real minutes. It needs no account and no install.
The three rules
You can carry three things at once. Pick up a fourth and the oldest
one you were carrying sinks — no error message, it just goes under.
One of the nine is a frog: the task you keep putting off. Every hour
you leave it, it grows, it croaks louder, and it starts moving around
the pond, so it is harder to catch at four o'clock than it was at
nine. Only what you deliver to the nest counts as done; everything
else was just something you carried around.
Why there is no score
There is no score, no leaderboard, no streak and nothing to farm,
because the best round is the one where you carried less — and a
scoreboard would teach the opposite. The day ends with a sentence
about how you spent it: the frog eaten before noon, the frog eaten at
dusk, a tidy day with the frog still sitting there, or nine things
picked up and two finished.
What it has to do with DuckDoro
DuckDoro caps a day at three intents and asks you to name the frog
before anything else. The game is that rule with the argument taken
out — you find out on your own why the fourth thing costs you one of
the first three. Sort your own list when you want
to try it on a real day.
